How long does it take to lose 80 pounds? It would take about 10 months to lose 80 pounds. A healthy weight loss is about 1 to 2 pounds per week. If you watch enough reality TV shows they will make you believe you can lose 80 pounds in a couple of weeks to a month, which is not realistic. Losing 80 pounds like that in such a ridiculously quick time is too extreme and can lead to a lot of severe health issues.

I helped a guy named Mike Hopper lose 116 pounds in one year and it was not easy at all. It was a marathon not a sprint, but he followed a tailored diet and exercise program I personally gave him, and the result was 116lbs that left his body in just 12 months. I worked with Mike for one year through my online diet and training program. And we did it the healthy way by eating in a balanced way which encompassed fruits, vegetables, protein foods and healthy fats.

The reason fruits and vegetables are so important to eat when you are trying to lose weight is because they are high in fiber and low in calories.

Some good fruits and vegetables to eat are:

  • Oranges
  • Strawberries
  • Oranges
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Brussel Sprouts

Eating Protein Regularly

Protein foods like chicken, turkey, fish, beef can fill up your stomach and help to suppress your appetite. The amount of protein you consume helps to maintain lean muscle mass. The more lean muscle mass you have the faster your metabolism will be. Your lean muscle tissue is tied to the rate of your metabolism.

To lose weight you need to be in a caloric deficit, and it means burning more calories than you consume. Exercise and diet are the two important things you can ever do when it comes to losing 80 pounds. Extreme diet and extreme exercise will make most people fail on their weight loss goals.

Extreme Exercise and Dieting

Extreme exercise means exercising 7 days a week for more than 2 hours a day. Extreme dieting means consuming less than 1000 calories a day which can negatively affect your metabolism because you are not consuming enough calories. And the lack of consumption of calories puts your body in starvation mode.

It takes a caloric deficit of 3500 calories to lose one pound of fat which means eating about 500 to 1000 calories per day less than you are burning.

When you are on any structured diet program you will lose the most amount of weight the first week. And that weight loss can be up to 7 to 9 pounds and most of the weight loss is water loss. After the first 10 days your weight loss typically stabilizes at 1 to 2 pounds per week.

Losing 2 pounds per week means you have to be in a caloric deficit of a 1000 calories daily. Losing one pound per week means you must be in a caloric deficit of 1 pound per week.

Drinking Water Regularly

Drinking water helps with weight loss because it suppresses your appetite. Studies show if you drink water before each meal, it will make you eat less food.  You should try to drink up to 8 glasses of water daily. The less food you eat means the more weight you lose. Being mindful of how many calories you are consuming, and the quality of calories is essential to losing 80 pounds.

Thinking you can lose 80 pounds in 6 months is too ambitious but having a goal of losing 80 pounds in 10 months is more attainable.

Avoid Processed Foods

Some of the empty calories you want to avoid are processed foods like cookies, crackers, chips, etc. Other empty calories are drinking a high amount of alcohol which increases water retention and causes you to overeat.

If you have a goal of losing 80 pounds you want to exercise at least 4 to 5 days a week for about an hour a day to help you burn calories. Cardiovascular and weight-training are both equally important when it comes to weight loss.

Cardiovascular Workouts

Some good cardiovascular workouts you can implement into your workout routine are swimming, gardening, jogging, cycling, walking, etc.

Resistance Training

Some good resistance training workouts are dumbbell free weights, body weight workouts, resistance band exercises. Resistance training workouts help to build and preserve lean muscle mass which helps to drive the rate of your resting metabolic rate.

The Bottom Line it takes about 10 months to lose 80 pounds if you are on a structured diet and exercise program. Anything significantly less than that would be too ambitious and too extreme.
